Troy Davis scheduled to die Tuesday night

Georgia wants to execute Troy Davis Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.  Six days later, the Supreme Court of the United States will decide if they want to take up the case.  New York Times columnist Bob Herbert wonders why Georgia is in such a rush.  A very good question.

  1. Yeah, what is the rush after 17 years on death row? Is Georgia afraid some new evidence might come to light, or that old evidence and recanted testimony might get a new hearing? If Georgia goes ahead and executes this man 6 days prior to the SCOTUS deciding whether they want to hear it this will be a stain on the name of Georgia that cannot be removed. Famed Baptist preacher R. G. Lee preached a famous sermon, “Pay Day Someday.” Sooner or later, Georgia will have to answer.

  2. Good question, Charles. Is Georgia worried that if the case is opened up for meaningful review the world will discover that the case against Troy Davis has largely disintegrated. And if this is true for Mr. Davis, might it also be true for other death row inmates in Georgia? Best to simply inject the death-dealing drugs and hope these issues die with Troy Davis.
