STAND FIRM FOR JUSTICE!
Global Day of Action for Troy Davis
Thursday, October 23rd
Troy Davis was denied clemency by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles on Friday, September 12, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his petition on October 14. This means that he may be scheduled for execution in the very near future. There will be a large rally at the state capitol in Atlanta, GA on October 23. Please organize solidarity rallies or other public events to demand justice for Troy Davis on this date.
IMPORTANT! This is a GLOBAL call to action. Please email jcohn@aiusa.org with a time and place of your event.
AT YOUR EVENT:
Make and bring signs that say “I am Troy Davis!”, or “We Are Troy Davis!”; you may also hold up enlarged photos of Troy Davis Emphasize that this execution is taking place despite that fact that Troy Davis’ strong claims of innocence have never been resolved. Express your sympathies for the family of Troy Davis and the family of Officer Mark Allen MacPhail. Emphasize that this execution, like all executions, will solve nothing and only add to the pain caused by the original crime. Call for abolition of the death penalty.
IDEAS FOR SOLIDARITY EVENTS:
Candlelight vigils (religious or secular) – Provide at least one speaker to put the event in context and to open and close the event. If possible, you might want to close the event with music or singing (the tone should be somber and serious). Be sure to provide candles and signs and/or banners with brief versions of the above messages. Have Troy Davis fact sheets on hand to give to interested passersby. Public rallies – Provide a few speakers, and a bullhorn or microphone. If possible, you might also want to include music or singing in the event (the tone should be somber and serious). Be sure to provide signs and/or banners with brief versions of the above messages. Have Troy Davis fact sheets on hand to give to interested passersby. MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO TROY AND HIS FAMILY. I AM AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN MOTHER, AND I HAVE A SON! THIS KIND OF THING IS ON THE HEART OF MANY AFRICAN-AMERICAN PARENTS, WHO HAVE A SON! IT IS SUCH A DISGRACE THAT THIS THING CONTINUES TO HAPPEN IN THIS COUNTRY–THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM HAS FAILED SO MANY AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALES UNTIL IT HAS BECOME A SPORT! MY HEART AND PRAYERS ARE WITH TROY DAVIS AND HIS FAMILY. GOD HAS RICHLY BLESSED AMERICA, AND LOOK WHAT THE AMERICAN JUSTICE SYSTEM DOES TO ONE OF GOD’S GREATEST RESOURCES–MAN! MAY GOD HELP US ALL, ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT ARE IN A POSITION TO DO SOMETHING BUT CHOOSES TO DO NOTHING!
I agree with Mary. I am a white mother and I sit here with tears running down for this travesty that’s scheduled for Monday. I can only be in Atlanta with my heart but will attempt to do something from Southern California.
I have written and faxed to the Georgia Board of Pardon and Parole with no answer. I faxed and called Governor Perdue who states since 1938, the Gov. is not allowed to commute a sentence. The board of Pardons is headed by a white woman and includes 2 white men and 2 men of color. One is an attorney. How can they allow this? Can President Bush do ONE good act and get Troy a pardon? I am heartsick.
