Looking back from a distance of almost 60 years, I can better understand why the Tlicho boy took such delight in spitting on me. The recent discovery of unmarked graves at residential schools across Canada has rocked me back on my self-righteous heels.
Sex and politics are messy subjects. In both arenas, the ideal (whatever we conceive it to be) is difficult to attain. Sometimes it’s impossible. But we need to be sharing our personal and community stories. We need to be encouraging one another. We need to make a start. Because, let’s face it, we need all the help we can get.

Whenever the gap between God’s unrelenting purpose and realities on the ground became intolerably immense, the Old Testament professor said, the prophets offered Israel an alternative future, conjured through the power of sanctified imagination.

That’s where Paul found himself. But God refused to leave him there. And so, deep in the dark night of the soul, with prison shackles on his wrists and his ankles, the apostle made a life-changing discovery: “Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” And I’m here to tell you that, because the Spirit of the Lord is in this place, we are free.
David Duke, Jack Strain and Walter Reed (and a certain politician who shall not be named) are monsters created in our own image. We turned these men loose on America. They are our responsibility. And until we face that ugly fact, men like Jace Washington won’t stand a chance.
