The Jena 6 story in a nutshell: Report and Recommendations

Media coverage of the Jena story was inspired by a brief narrative compiled by Alan Bean, director of Friends of Justice (see link below).  The information contained in this document was culled from interviews with dozens of black and white Jena residents, newspaper accounts, eye witness statements and court documents.  Dr. Bean’s account shows how official tolerance for racial hatred sparked a steadily escalating string of violent encounters between white and black students.   The accuracy of this information has since been confirmed by other investigators.

  1. When I read this story I could not believe it, this just confirmed every feeling I have ever had about racisim. You know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not when it affects the lives of others and this is definetly one of those times. How can anyone condone Nooses hanging from a School tree not Asia America, Hispanic America, Indigenous America NOT even White America!! By the way do they even Know? I happened across the article in a magazine while my husband and son were getting their hair cut. Why hasn’t the story went nationwide? Maybe that is one of the problems, not a lot of people are aware? What about our fearless leader, “President Bush”? Does he even care? Maybe not since he can’t run for another term. One more question, after all the blacks are gone who is next?

  2. THE ROOT OF THIS MESS IS EVIL- AND RACIST .. HOW CAN FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS BE ON THE JURY STAND. CONFLICT OF INTEREST, NOT FAIR
THE BOYS MUST BE RELEASED FROM THIS UNGODLY RULE. GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING WHERE THE WHITE STUDENTS MADE A FEDERAL OFFENSE. CHARGE THEM CORRECTLY.
    ALL ARE STUDENTS NOT ADULTS
GIVE EACH PERSON HIS OR HER RIGHTS

WE ALL HAVE FOUGHT WITH OTHER STUDENTS BEFORE AND STRANGERS HOW IS GOING TO JAIL FOR YEARS CONNECTED, THE 80% WHITE TOWN DO NOT RULE THE PRESIDENT NOR THE WORLD… ALLOW EACH STUDENT TO LIVE A GOOD LIFE AND LEARN FROM THIS… BRING IN ANOTHER JUDGE , ANOTHER ATTORNEY AND ANOTHER JURY…

  3. Thank you for a clear and concise summary of the events and facts leading up to this tragedy. Unfortunately, racism is not dead and this could happen anywhere in the United States. This is a sad commentary on the state of race relations in the United States.

  4. I beleive if we want a true sense of our Presidendial Candidates they should all be asked to comment on this situation and what they will do as President to insure that it never happens again. This is a hate crime perpetrated by the Judge and District Attorney. If AG Alberto Gonzales were to address this before his final day in office it would go along way in restoring some sense of confidence in teh Justice Dept.

  5. what has this country come to? in 2007 we are still allowing people’s ignorance to be tolorated in the public eye of america, this stupid D.A., superintendent, principle, and all the rest involved had the nerve to abuse there power and authority within the system, and not expect a backlash!! wake-up racist people the world is changing fast come out of the back woods, and dark holes and join the rest of the world and act like civilized human beings or be treated like the animals you are!!!

  6. It’s too bad, but unfortunately racism will never end in this country. We can never get the message out that equality and justice for all means “Everyone”. Too many times I’ve been a victim of racism and it never ends. Have we come a long way? Of course, but have we even began to solve the problem? Not really. We will always be plagued by this ugly disease and no matter what legislation is made or laws put into action, we will always be a victim of discrimination at every level.

  7. It is sad to think it but I would guess that some form of racism, though perhaps miniscule in the number of offenses, will always exist amongst human beings.
I believe this because I see that in the hearts of all is evil and I trust that the prophesy of our Lord is true that “the love of many shall grow cold”.
The most heart-breaking part of this is that it is very likely that on the average 4 out of 5 of all those involved are members of a families that are regular church attendees and consider themselves Christians.
I thought we fought this war over 140 years ago. But then we had to fight again 100 years later. It’s time we remembered the 2nd of the greatest commandments.

  8. Even though this is an issue involves people of different races, I want everyone to ask themselves this, looking beyond races of all the people involved including your own, did these boys not commit a crime? Was there not 6 boy’s beating up on one single boy? Did they not continue to beat him while he was unconscious?

I believe that this is a viscous crime committed by 6 young men.

The point isn’t how bad they actually hurt him; it is about the intent of the attack!

After reviewing this issue without considering race of the individuals involved, these individuals are guilty of the crime to which they committed.

Living in the world we do today, civil rights leaders bring race into every issue but ones that may harm there march for so called civil rights!

People are going about this issue wrong, “Drop all Charges”, now that is ridiculous!

These boys committed the crime and now should have to do the time, let them go and what are we doing for the future of America?

  9. okay.. the boys did jump on the white kid (which happens all the time ,with all races) they should get whatever the punishment is in the school student handbook; NOT 20YRS IN PRISON!!!!! THATS CRAZY!!! Some people look at in a different way; but if it was their sons in jail, it would be a different story.

  10. PEOPLE PLEASE GET THE WHOLE STORY FROM ” BEGINNING TO END” , BEFORE YOU PAST JUDGEMENT ON THESE BOYS!!! YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT LEAD UP TO THE WHITE KID GETTING HIS TAIL BEAT. THE BOYS SHOULD BE IN TROUBLE;BUT NOT IN JAIL!!!!!

  11. Ignorant little racist hill-billy boys like their white trash parents are thankfully yet SLOWLY going to be a thing of the past some day but when I see members of the Jena 6 signing aughtographs at the rally and being treated as if they were Rosa Parks or MLK makes me sick. When did 6 people beating 1 become heroic?

  12. I as a white person am ashamed of the way other white people treat other people with different skin color or religen ect. I would like to send my heart and wishes and prayers out to the families of the boys that are being tryed for doing nothing but standing up for them selves. Had they been white they would have gotten a slap on the rist and sent on their marry little way. On behalf of the people weather they be white, cathlic, black or jew it should not matter what we are I would just like to say I am so deeply sorry for the boys and their families and they will be in my prayers. may GOD be with them.

  13. Okay tell me this
If someone comes to you and starts calling you names like “n*gga” or another one pulls a gun infront of your face ,you will stand there and invite him for some coffee
The real crime would be to have done nothing against that.
Nothing can take away a man’s pride and it is unacceptable to jugde someone for wanting to protect himself as long as no one gets killed.
The real problem people should focus on is social. This incident is the explicit reflection of the instability that reins in the U.S society. People still had they’re mind affected by the years of segregation and slavery and have passed it on throught generations making racism part of their sons education(white or black) instead of letting them evolve together in order to become tolerant and open minded. It is up to the parents to make the right choice for their children and let them become better citizen than they were.

  14. Your are the racist for calling them hillbillies… makes you fell better about yourself… BTW-What proof do you have that they lived in the Allegheny mountains.

  15. Now that all the facts came out don’t you feel stupid for condeming the Whites…
